Standards & Certification — International Association of Orgasmologists

Standards & Certification

Developing professional competencies, ethical standards, and certification requirements for Orgasmic Learning.

The International Association of Orgasmologists is developing the professional standards and credentialing structure for qualified professionals working within the Orgasmic Learning framework and its evidence-supported pathways.

The goal is to establish a professional structure through which practitioners develop the scientific foundation, pathway-specific skills, ethical understanding, applied experience, and demonstrated competency needed to responsibly help women with orgasm difficulty access, learn, strengthen, restore, and expand orgasmic response.

Professional certification requirements are currently in development.

Why Professional Standards Matter

Evidence-supported pathways provide the scientific foundation for Orgasmic Learning.

Responsible professional application requires clearly defined standards for education, competency, ethics, professional boundaries, scope of practice, applied experience, and continuing professional development.

Professionals working within the Orgasmic Learning framework need clearly defined expectations regarding:

  • Scientific and professional knowledge
  • Professional competencies
  • Ethical practice
  • Defined scope of practice
  • Pathway-specific education and training
  • Competency assessment
  • Supervised application
  • Case-based experience
  • Outcome documentation
  • Continuing education
  • Maintenance of professional competency

The International Association of Orgasmologists is being developed to establish these standards specifically for professional practice within Orgasmic Learning and its evidence-supported pathways.

A Competency-Based Model

Certification will be based on demonstrated competency.

Professional education provides the knowledge foundation for certification. Competency assessment, applied experience, supervised or reviewed practice, and case-based demonstration provide evidence that the professional can responsibly apply that knowledge within an appropriate scope of practice.

Certification requirements are being developed to assess competency in areas that include:

  • Female orgasmic function and orgasm difficulty
  • Foundations in Orgasmology
  • The Orgasmic Learning framework
  • The six evidence-supported pathways
  • Absorbed, altered, and orgasm-supportive states
  • Orgasmic access and learning
  • Strengthening and generalization of orgasmic response
  • Ethics and professional boundaries
  • Appropriate scope of practice
  • Pathway-specific professional competency
  • Assessment and documentation of outcomes

The Certification Structure

The developing professional certification model moves from the broader scientific field of Orgasmology, into the Orgasmic Learning framework, and then into pathway-specific professional competency.

1. Foundations in Orgasmology

Professionals first develop a broader foundation in the interdisciplinary study of orgasm and orgasmic capacity.

Foundations in Orgasmology includes:

  • The interdisciplinary study of orgasm and orgasmic capacity
  • Female orgasmic function and orgasm difficulty
  • Historical and contemporary orgasm research
  • Research across sexual medicine, neuroscience, psychology, pelvic-floor science, and related disciplines
  • The development of Orgasmology as a professional field
  • Evidence-supported approaches to orgasmic access

Foundations in Orgasmology provides the scientific foundation for professional study within Orgasmic Learning.

2. Foundations in Orgasmic Learning

Professionals then develop a common foundation in the Orgasmic Learning framework.

Education includes:

  • The Orgasmic Learning framework
  • The six evidence-supported pathways
  • Absorbed, altered, and orgasm-supportive states
  • State-dependent learning
  • Orgasmic access
  • Learning and strengthening of orgasmic response
  • Generalization of orgasmic response
  • Ethics and professional boundaries
  • Scope of practice
  • Professional application of the framework

Foundations in Orgasmic Learning is required core education within the professional certification structure.

3. Specialty Pathway Training

Qualified professionals then pursue education and competency development within a specific evidence-supported Orgasmic Learning pathway.

Specialty pathway development includes:

  • The published evidence supporting the pathway
  • Its relationship to the broader Orgasmic Learning framework
  • Pathway-specific knowledge and skills
  • Appropriate professional application
  • Ethical considerations
  • Scope-of-practice considerations
  • Supervised or reviewed application
  • Case-based experience
  • Competency assessment

This structure allows professionals to build from the broader science of Orgasmology, into the Orgasmic Learning framework, and then into demonstrated competency within a specific evidence-supported pathway.

Specialty Pathway Credentials

Professional certification is being developed around demonstrated competency within specific evidence-supported Orgasmic Learning pathways.

First Specialty Pathway in Development

The first credential currently in development is:

Certified Orgasmologist — Hypnotic Induction for Orgasmic Difficulty

The specialty pathway is being developed by Suzanne Mulvehill, PhD, developer of the Orgasmic Learning framework, and hypnotist Albert Nerenberg, who performed the hypnotic induction used in the 2025 study by Pfaus and colleagues examining hypnotically induced orgasm in women.

In that study, five fully clothed premenopausal women experienced orgasm through hypnotic suggestion without direct genital stimulation. The researchers reported an average post-orgasm plasma prolactin increase to 147% of baseline, together with characteristic pelvic-floor and abdominal contractions. The study also compared the participants’ hypnotically induced orgasms with orgasms experienced during solo masturbation and partnered sex, providing both physiological and subjective evidence that orgasm can be induced through hypnotic suggestion without genital stimulation.

Professional training will integrate:

  • Foundations in Orgasmology
  • Foundations in Orgasmic Learning
  • Specialty training in Hypnotic Induction for Orgasmic Difficulty
  • Pathway-specific competency assessment
  • Supervised or reviewed professional application
  • Required case-based experience
  • Ethical and scope-of-practice competency

Participants will study the scientific foundation of Orgasmology, the Orgasmic Learning framework, the evidence underlying the six pathways, the role of absorbed and altered states in orgasmic access, and the specialized professional application of hypnotic induction.

Professional specialty training is currently in development, with Hypnotic Induction for Orgasmic Difficulty as the first specialty pathway.

Demonstrating Competency

Certification within Orgasmic Learning is being designed around demonstrated professional competency.

The developing model includes:

  • Completion of required Foundations in Orgasmology education
  • Completion of required Foundations in Orgasmic Learning education
  • Completion of specialty pathway education
  • Demonstration of pathway-specific knowledge and skills
  • Competency assessment
  • Supervised or reviewed professional application
  • One to three case studies with documented outcomes
  • Review of ethical and scope-of-practice considerations
  • Successful completion of applicable certification requirements

Case-based experience is intended to demonstrate that a professional can move from theoretical understanding to responsible application within professional practice.

The Association is developing standards for how cases will be documented, reviewed, and evaluated.

Scope of Practice

Certification in Orgasmic Learning operates within a professional’s existing legal and professional scope of practice.

Professionals apply Orgasmic Learning and any specialty pathway within the scope permitted by their existing education, credentials, professional role, and applicable laws and regulations.

The same Orgasmic Learning framework may therefore be applied differently by professionals from different disciplines.

A hypnotist, psychotherapist, physician, pelvic-floor practitioner, sexologist, or other qualified professional remains responsible for practicing within the boundaries of their own profession.

Specialty pathway eligibility and competency requirements will take these differences into account.

Ethical Standards

Professional work involving orgasm difficulty requires clear standards regarding boundaries, consent, vulnerability, professional roles, competency, and client safety.

The Association is developing ethical standards specific to professional practice within Orgasmic Learning.

These standards will address areas including:

  • Informed consent
  • Professional boundaries
  • Client autonomy
  • Confidentiality
  • Appropriate scope of practice
  • Evidence-informed communication
  • Professional competency
  • Referral when needs fall outside the practitioner’s scope
  • Appropriate documentation
  • Responsible representation of credentials

Orgasmic Learning professional training is designed as non-genital professional practice.

Continuing Education and Professional Development

Professional competency requires continued learning.

The developing certification structure will include continuing education and renewal requirements designed to help certified professionals remain current with:

  • Emerging research
  • Changes in the Orgasmic Learning evidence base
  • Professional ethics
  • Pathway-specific developments
  • Professional best practices
  • Evolving competency standards

Continuing education supports ongoing professional competency as Orgasmology and Orgasmic Learning continue to develop.

Future Specialty Pathways

As the professional certification structure develops, additional specialty pathways are planned in:

  • Cannabis-Assisted Orgasmic Learning
  • Pelvic Floor & Somatic-Motor Orgasmic Learning
  • Fantasy & Imagery
  • Breath-Based and Tantra-Informed Altered-State Approaches

Each specialty pathway will be grounded in published research and developed within the broader Orgasmic Learning framework.

Training, eligibility, competency assessment, and certification requirements will be developed specifically for the professional skills and scope-of-practice considerations relevant to each pathway.

Building a Qualified Professional Community

The International Association of Orgasmologists is developing a professional community grounded in the science of Orgasmology, the Orgasmic Learning framework, pathway-specific education, demonstrated competency, ethical practice, and continuing professional development.

The goal is to establish a qualified professional community equipped to help women with orgasm difficulty access, learn, strengthen, restore, generalize, and expand orgasmic response.
